The Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW) program is designed for individuals who want to begin a career in healthcare and community service. JCHEWs play a vital role in promoting health awareness, assisting in medical care, and supporting healthcare professionals in their daily tasks. They serve as a bridge between the healthcare system and the community, helping to improve overall public health.
Students in this program will learn basic medical skills, including first aid, wound dressing, and administering simple treatments. They will also be trained on how to recognize symptoms of common diseases and refer patients to higher healthcare centers when necessary. The course covers topics such as personal hygiene, nutrition, and vaccination to help prevent illness and promote well-being.
A significant part of the training focuses on maternal and child health. Students will be taught how to assist during childbirth, provide antenatal and postnatal care, and educate mothers on proper childcare practices. They will also participate in immunization programs to help protect children from preventable diseases such as measles, polio, and tuberculosis.
In addition to medical training, the program includes lessons on environmental health. Students will learn how to promote clean water usage, proper waste disposal, and good sanitation practices in communities. They will also be involved in outreach programs that educate the public on disease prevention and healthy living habits.
Communication and teamwork skills are essential for JCHEWs. The program teaches students how to interact with patients, work with nurses and doctors, and educate community members effectively. They will also learn how to maintain medical records and report health issues to relevant authorities.
Upon graduation, JCHEWs can work in primary healthcare centers, maternity clinics, and non-profit health organizations. They can also further their education to become Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) or specialize in specific areas of healthcare.
